The following books are recommended by NYHFA. Click on a book's image to purchase it (from Amazon or Chivalry Bookshelf). NYHFA will only recommend books that our members own and have read. As our reading list grows, so will our list of recommendations.

We would not go so far as to say that owning a copy "Fighting with the German Longsword" by Christian Henry Tobler is required for membership in NYHFA, but we're seriously considering it. "Fighting" is not just a translation of period manuscripts, it is a self contained training guide for studying the German longsword in the Liechtenauer tradition. Based on Christian's interpretations and teaching experience, "Fighting" is a compilation of drills, techniques and philosophies taken from several original manuscripts, including those of Hanko Döbringer, Sigmund Ringeck, Hans Talhoffer, Paulus Kals, the von Danzig fechtbuch, Jud Lew, Hans von Speyer, and Joachim Meyer. Complete with illustrative photos and thorough instructions, "Fighting" is best thought of as a workbook for studying the longsword. All members of NYHFA are strongly encouraged to purchase their own copy.

Secrets of German Medieval Swordsmanship by Christian Henry Tobler is a translation and interpretation of the commentaries on Liechtenauer's verses by 15th century master Sigmund Ringeck, master-at-arms to the Duke of Bavaria. "Secrets" is a line by line translation of Liechtenauer's verse and Ringeck's commentaries, complete with Christian's own interpretations and illustrative photographs. This book is highly recommended for those who want to see what lies behind the interpretations and glimpse deeper into the Liechtenauer tradition. Getting the most out of "Secrets" is a scholarly pursuit, and well worth the effort.

The Sword in the Age of Chivalry by Ewart Oakeshott should be considered required reading for the sword enthusiast. This volume contains an in depth study of European medieval swords from about the 10th to the late 15th century. Eward Oakeshott was a British amateur historian who developed a typology for the classification of European medieval and early Renaissance swords that is in extensive use by experts and amateurs alike. Knowledge of the Oakeshott typology is very important for anyone studying European swords and swordsmanship.
Arms and Armor of the Medieval Knight is a beautifully illustrated book that describes the evolution of European Arms and Armor from the 11th to the 16th century. This book is highly recommended for "getting your feet wet" in the study of medieval arms and armor.
