The New York Historical Fencing Association (NYHFA) is an organization dedicated to the research, practice and proliferation of Historical European Swordsmanship (HES). We are primarily focused on the study of the medieval longsword, based on the teachings of the 14th century German master Johannes Liechtenauer and those that expanded upon his verses, including the works of Sigmund Ringeck and Hans Talhoffer.

NYHFA holds weekly classes every Sunday from September to June (no classes July and August). Our training facility is located at 505 Ovington Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11209 (corner of 5th and Ovington), near the Bay Ridge Avenue stop of the R train.

NYHFA is closed for the summer season. Classes will resume in September.

Enrollment is open to anyone with sufficient interest and dedication (this is a martial art and requires hard work and discipline). We also offer group seminars, private lessons and demonstrations (anywhere in New York State or northern New Jersey).

A Chapter of
Selohaar Fechtschule

“Young Knight learn,
to love God and revere women,
so that your honor grows.
Practice knighthood and learn
the Art that dignifies you,
and brings you honour in wars.
Wrestle well, and wield lance,
spear, sword and dagger manfully,
whose use in others’ hands is wasted.
Strike bravely and hard there! Rush to, strike
or miss. Those with wisdom
loathe, the one forced to defend.
This you should graps:
All arts have length and measure.”
- Johannes Liechtenauer,
